iOS 11.1.1: iPhone update finally lets people write the letter 'I' again

Apple is finally fixing perhaps one of the most quielty irritating bugs ever to hit the iPhone.

For days, people have been unable to type the letter 'I' on their phones. Instead, the iPhone will auto-correct it into the letter "A" and then a strange character, and nobody knew why.

The phenomenon has been visible across the web – with many famous people accidentally posting nonsense onto their social networks – as well as in private chats with people unable to write one of the most common letters in the English language.

The problem was especially frustrating because it spread like a virus. Only some people were initially affected by the problem, but anyone who received the problem text would have the wording logged in their phone and then find themselves unable to type "I" after all.

It's still not clear how it was able to happen, or where the problem came from.

Now, Apple has rolled out a software update meant primarily to fix that problem. iOS 11.1.1, which comes just days after the iOS 11.1 update that started the problem, finally fixes that issue according to Apple's update notes.

It also "fixes an issue where Hey Siri stops working", Apple said in the notes, which can be read by heading to the Settings app and clicking into "general" to update your phone.

Apple had initially rolled out a slightly complicated workaround, but that is no longer necessary.
