Q. I read recently that Steve Bull, of Wolves, has scored more than 300 goals against some 70 different clubs in his career. What is his exact record and has any other player approached this feat at one club?

A. At the time of writing, Steve Bull had scored 306 goals for Wolves against 45 different clubs with 18 hat-tricks.

A. Celtic's Jimmy McGrory scored 410 league goals for one club between 1922 and 1938 and 550 in his career. George Camsell scored 348 league goals for Middlesbrough and John Atyeo 315 for Bristol City.

Q. When was the last time an English bowler took 100 first-class wickets in a season and did not make the winter tour?

A. Clive O'Donnell's answer (4 October) is incorrect in that although Neal Radford did not make the Pakistan tour in 1987-88 he was on the tour to New Zealand that winter in which he played one Test. Jonathan Agnew took 100 wickets in 1987 yet was invited on neither tour.

Q. In terms of size of population, which is the smallest place with a football team ever to reach the FA Cup first round proper?

A. In 1879, Turton FC met Nottingham Forest. They also played Sheffield Wednesday and Brighton in the competition. In 1884 the same side beat Lower Darwen 9-1 in a Lancashire Cup tie. Darwen complained that the Turton side were "all professionals". The naughty 11 had to go before a commission in Bolton where they were asked their names and addresses. In every case the address was "High Street, Turton". The whole team lived within a 200- yard stretch in the same street in a village of 300 people. The club was established in 1872 and its pitch in the village, which lies in the moors between Blackburn and Bolton, is still in use.
