Christian Malcolm set a new Welsh 200m record and a personal best as he breezed into the semi–finals.
The 22–year–old from Cardiff won the opening heat in 20.13secs, sending out a warning to his rivals in what is a wide–open field, especially as Maurice Greene has withdrawn through injury.
But Britain's Dwain Chambers failed to make it through as he finished fifth in his heat in a time of 20.60secs – and only the first four runners in each race qualified.
Britain's other sprinter, Marlon Devonish, did make it through to join Malcolm in the semis. He survived making a false start in the second of the four heats, before bouncing back to finish third in 20.44secs.
