French prosecutors requested that a corruption case against the former National Assembly speaker Henri Emmanuelli be dropped, heralding the end of an affair that contributed to the Socialists' recent fall from power, Reuter reports from Rennes.
The indictment of Mr Emman uelli, accusing him of arranging illicit party funding while party treasurer from 1988 to 1991, was leaked to the press before a crucial Socialist congress and fuelled anger over corruption involving senior party members. Mr Emmanuelli protested his innocence.
