`Colliversity' scheme fails

A pioneering plan to create Britain's first "colliversity" offering a range of qualifications from hairdressing diplomas to doctorates by merging a university and two further-education colleges has collapsed after one of the colleges pulled out.

Governors at Mackworth College, Derby, yesterday dropped plans to merge with Derby University and High Peak College, Buxton, claiming it wanted to face educational challenges "as an independent college rather than as part of an enlarged institution".
