PORTUGUESE banks have introduced a minimum charge for changing travellers' cheques of 2,000 escudos plus 0.9 per cent tax, which is about pounds 9 per transaction. So if you take traveller's cheques to Portugal change largish amounts at a time.

Portugal has plenty of cash machines that will accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Eurocheque cards. The charge for getting money on plastic is usually 1.5 per cent.
