Britten experts will be able to detect the whiff of Peter Grimes and all sorts in his 1941 folk operetta with a libretto by WH Auden. Newcomers will simply revel in the abundant melodies, the rich harmonies, and best of all, the entrancing production wittily designed by Hildegard Bechtler and bathed in light by Wolfgang Gobbel. Producer Francesca Zambello told the company she believed the piece was perfect for anyone aged seven and upwards. Hear, hear. The terrific cast (especially Graham Broadbent as the chef who only cooks beans) have a ball, playing everything from lumberjacks to giants, and so do the audience. It should be brought into the repertoire immediately. If everything the ROH did was as good as this, there wouldn't be a crisis. Closes tomorrow.
