I wonder whether someone could look into one of the great mysteries of the universe: why wordprocessing packages cannot get quotation marks right. More often not one has to put up with ' , which is alright, I suppose, but why can't one have the conventional inverted commas (' and '). Sometimes one gets the close quotes, but I have yet to come across a package which gives you the opening marks.

My opening quote on Wordperfect is like some errant thing from space. On other packages I have had to use close quote marks at both ends. And when I ring the publishing companies, they simply tell me proper quote marks are 'too difficult'.
