The White House was not given advance notice of Ukraine's 'large-scale' drone attack that destroyed a fleet of about 40 Russian military bombers.
The drone attack, which targeted five bases deep inside Russian territory, took over a year and a half to plan and was personally supervised by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Ukrainian officials launched drones from trucks covertly parked near Russian air bases, some as far away as Siberia.
The attack occurred as Mr Zelensky announced he would send a delegation to conduct ceasefire talks with Russia in Istanbul.
The drone strike happened as seven people were killed and 69 more injured after bridges collapsed in separate incidents across Russia.
