Doomed Bayesian’s vulnerabilities ‘unknown’ to crew before sinking

Salvage operation on sunken Bayesian superyacht begins off coast of Sicily
  • The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has released an interim report on the sinking of the superyacht Bayesian, owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch.
  • The yacht sank off the coast of Sicily on August 19, 2024, killing seven people, including Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.
  • The report indicates that extreme winds, exceeding 70 knots, capsized the vessel in just 15 seconds.
  • The yacht's vulnerability to such winds was “unknown” to the crew as it wasn't included in onboard stability information, investigators said.
  • A criminal investigation by Italian authorities has limited the MAIB's access to the wreck, hindering the investigation.
