Jon Stewart: New animated show from the Daily Show host set to launch on HBO later this year

Later this year, the world will be introduced to Jon Stewart as we’ve never seen him before.

Having retired from late night TV last year, the ex-Daily Show host is set to return to HBO with a digital animated series which will satirically comment on the goings on in US politics.

According to HBO programming president Casey Bloys, who spoke to reporters on Saturday evening, Stewart’s short-form programme will hopefully be "up and running by September or October" in the hope of being able to comment on the upcoming Presidential race.

Few details are known about the currently unnamed show, but Bloys did say, according to Deadline: “It’s an animated parody of a cable news network. It’s Onion-like, with video and text. It’s very much Jon’s voice and tone.”

Unlike typical animated programmes, the cartoons will use modern technology to ‘live draw' the segments, allowing Stewart “to comment on events in real time.”

The same technology has been recently implemented in Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show, the host interviewing cartoon versions of Hilary Clinton and Trump live on the show.

Stewart’s programme will run on HBO’s digital channels, while half-hour compilations are also expected to run on HBO’s linear channel in the US.

Boys added that HBO had secured a four-year deal with Stewart, adding he would be working with graphics company OTOY Inc. “to develop new technology that will allow him to produce timely, current-events-focused short-form digital content, which will be refreshed on HBO NOW multiple times throughout the day.”

Recently, Stewart returned to late night TV, joining Colbert in a timely take-down of Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump.
