Going Out: Art - PRIVATE VIEW

As anyone who hasn't been completely cocooned from the news for the last couple of weeks will have noticed, the recent visit by the Chinese president was not an unqualified success. However, one of the more palatable aspects of his presence here was the spur that it gave to an official cultural exchange. Not to be outdone the ICA in London is about to stage its own unofficial version: "Beijing-London", a week-long festival of art, music, food and film from the Chinese avant garde.

It promises much: the Chinese Pavilion was one of the highlights of this summer's Venice Biennale and a number of the artists who made that a success will be making work for "Revolutionary Capitals", the exhibition that forms the centrepiece of the ICA's celebrations. The cutting edge of the contemporary art world always likes to think it is a little bit dangerous in a sort of anti-establishment, underground way - it rarely is, but this looks like it may be the exception. It's a diverse, and no doubt uneven glimpse of the Chinese scene, but well worth a look.
