Architecture Update: Little Englanders?

IF YOUNG British architects are to continue to participate in Europan, a biannual architectural ideas competition for new social housing, the Department of the Environment must find pounds 100,000 to finance Britain's full membership of the scheme. An announcement is expected this week, with an exhibition of British submissions to Europan 3 opening tomorrow at the Royal Institute of British Architects. At present, Britain has only associate membership, which means that although British architects may enter, British sites cannot be considered. If the DoE decides not to support the competition, British architects will be barred from competing. This year, 10 British teams won prizes; only the French did better.
