Architecture Update: In Albert's defence

AS PART of its campaign to save the Albert Memorial from permanent incarceration in scaffolding, the Victorian Society has organised a Save Albert day on 3 June. It hopes that the joint forces of architectural historians, English Heritage and Westminster City Council will encourage the Department of National Heritage to help to restore one of London's most famous landmarks. The work is expected to cost pounds 10m. The organisers are hoping for support from the Royal Family, too.

Teresa Sladen, secretary of the Victorian Society, says: 'Although the memorial was built by public subscription, it is in fact a family monument.' The conference will be held at the Royal Geographic Society, Kensington Gore, opposite the Albert Memorial. (Fee: pounds 25; bookings: 081-994 1019.)
