RICK MATHER has won a competition to design a new gateway for the Lycee Francais Charles de Gaulle in South Kensington, London. The gateway to the long-established French school will include four new classrooms together with a porter's lodge and flat. Mather, designer of Britain's best-looking new student accommodation (at the University of East Anglia), has taken the opportunity to smarten up the rather sad-looking cul-de-sac that leads to the lycee.

The gateway building is a simple, handsome building gathered around a new playground and chestnust tree. It will be paid for by the French government. Runners-up in the competition were Munkenbeck & Marshall and Zaha Hadid.
